Kidgarten 2.0 · In development

Building open digital spaces for communities that matter.

Kidgarten began as a private communication platform for kindergartens, educators, and families. Today, we are exploring an open-source foundation for trusted private communities — starting with education.

Kidgarten 2.0 is in research and planning. The new platform is not yet available.

Vision

Technology should bring communities together, not take control of them.

A kindergarten, a neighborhood association, a club: many communities need a digital space of their own, where the people who belong can talk, share and organize without being watched, sold to or locked in.

Private means more than a password. It means clear roles, so everyone knows who can see what; access that is given, never assumed; and meaningful control over data, so a community decides what is kept, for how long, and who may take it out.

Kidgarten 2.0 explores how such spaces can be built as open infrastructure: shared, reusable and accessible, starting with early childhood education, where we come from.

Open Communities Core · Proposed

Reusable building blocks for private digital spaces.

Reusable building blocks for organizations to create and manage private digital spaces, with clear roles, secure access, and meaningful control over data. Currently in planning and design.

  • Building block

    Spaces

A private place for one community: a group, a class, an organization. Closed by default, open only to its members.

  • Building block

    Roles and access

Who belongs, and what each person may see and do. Access is given by the community, never assumed.

  • Building block

    Data control

The organization decides what is kept, for how long, and who may take it out. Taking the data out is part of the design.

The licence and the public repository will be decided after the audit of the existing code. Nothing is published yet.

Kidgarten Education · Planned

Reimagining how early childhood education communities connect families and educators.

We are preparing the next Kidgarten experience with privacy and accessibility at its core.

  • For

    Families

What happened today, what is coming up and who to ask, in one place, without a public social network in between.

  • For

    Educators

One space per group instead of scattered chats and paper notes, with clear rules about what is shared and with whom.

  • For

    Institutions

A pilot collaboration asks for time and honest feedback, not for data about children and not for a budget surprise.

Kidgarten 2.0 is in research and planning. The new platform is not yet available.

Principles

The principles behind every space.

  • Principle

    Privacy by design

Only the data a community needs, kept as long as it is useful, explained in plain words. No audit is claimed before it has been done.

  • Principle

    Open technology

Built in the open where it can be, on open standards, so a community is never locked in and others can build on the same foundation.

  • Principle

    Accessibility

Usable by everyone, on the phones and connections people actually have. Accessibility is a requirement, not a feature.

  • Principle

    Portability

A community owns its data and can take it elsewhere, in a form that another system can read.

  • Principle

    Sustainability

Paid for in a way that keeps it running without selling attention or data, and small enough to maintain for years.

Our story

Built from experience. Reimagined for the future.

Kidgarten started in 2017 in Romania as a private communication platform for kindergartens, educators and families: the news of the day, messages and planning, in a closed space, instead of public social networks.

The pandemic of 2020 closed the kindergartens, and with them the everyday use of the platform. It was paused. It is not coming back as it was.

What stays is the experience: what educators and families needed, what they did not, and where a private platform can fail its community. Kidgarten 2.0 builds on that, with open foundations, for more kinds of communities than one.

Roadmap

Where we are, and what comes next.

Each stage starts when the one before it is done. There are no release dates, and no funding is assumed.

  1. Research and discovery (Current stage)

Talking with educators, families, institutions and developers; auditing the existing code; deciding what to keep.

  2. Open foundations

Designing the Core and choosing the licence; publishing the repository and the first documentation.

  3. Pilot institutions

Building Kidgarten Education with a few kindergartens that want to try it, and learning from them.

  4. Sustainable access

A way to pay for the work that keeps the platform open and affordable for the communities it serves.
